Expectations:

  • Time Commitment Sunday 8:45am-finished or 10:45am-finished

  • How often serve 2x per month

  • Level Required Level 2

  • Team expectations:

    • Good listener and patient

    • Flexible and ready to pray at a moment’s notice

    • Possess a solid understanding of scripture so that we are praying according to His will

Policy:

Prayer Partners are expected to live above reproach both in word and deed and to set an example of a person following Christ. With that in mind, here are the policies for the Prayer Team at Word of Grace:

  • Men pray with men and women with women. If a couple desires prayer, either a couple or single man or woman may pray with the couple.

  • Offer to hold the person’s hand or place your hand on the individual’s shoulder to offer prayer. We should not touch any other part of the individual’s body unless given specific permission (e.g. head, stomach, or certain location of ailment).

  • Please be prepared and considerate by having fresh breath.

  • We believe in anointing people with oil as instructed in Scripture. If you feel led to do so, always ask permission first and never place oil on clothing. The oil will be located in the prayer team baskets along with napkins or tissue to wipe off oil after prayer if the person would like.

  • Do not counsel but rather suggest counseling through appropriate avenues noted on the resource cards located in the prayer team baskets. Be aware of the Community Groups that are currently offered and resources as a “next-step” for someone so you can help point them in the right direction. There will be resource cards located in the prayer team baskets on the stage.

  • If someone is accepted Christ or making a major life decision for Christ, please direct them to fill out an “I said Yes to God” card. These are available in the prayer team baskets.

  • We believe in the gift of tongues at Word of Grace; however, we will not pray in tongues over a person. We want to follow the instruction that Paul gave the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 14. Please pray quietly and in a way that will be least distracting to those around you and not draw attention to yourself in your prayer but rather pray in a way that the one being ministered to can hear and understand you.

  • Always dress modestly in a way that will not distract and draw attention to yourself. Always be clean and not offensive with any scent, especially body odor and strong colognes/perfumes.

  • If God uses you in the spiritual gift of knowledge or wisdom, please make certain the word you believe God has given you is indeed from Him and glorifies God and not you. After a word is given, always ask the person if they agree as it should be a confirmation to them.

  • If you are praying with someone and you do not know how to handle the situation or something is beginning to get out of hand, find your team leader, a board of trustee member or pastor to bring about a resolution. If someone is drawing attention to themselves through being loud or even manifesting something demonic, please gently escort them out of the sanctuary as to not be a distraction to the congregation so the situation can be handled privately.

  • If someone shares anything illegal or speaks to you about physical abuse, we are obligated by law to report such findings. Therefore, please share with them that you are obligated to share this information with the Lead Pastor regardless of the time frame in which it happened and that he will need to share those things with law enforcement. Ask them to fill out a Connect Card with their contact information, so it can be given directly to the Lead Pastor. Always handle these situations with delicacy and a gentle spirit.

  • Always look for a point you can agree with people on. If they are asking for prayer regarding something unscriptural such as, “Please pray God shows my spouse we need a divorce because we aren’t good for one another,” offer instead to pray that God heals their marriage. We will always pray in agreement with God’s revealed will that is in scripture. If they decline, let them know you will be praying for what we believe and see in scripture is God’s will. Do so in a gentle manner.

  • Always accept or decline when you are scheduled on Planning Center.

  • Be in prayer before you arrive and prepare your heart for ministry.

  • Stay in the Word and always be growing in your relationship with God and understanding of Scripture.

  • Always be ready to be called upon at a moment’s notice for prayer at anytime during the service.

  • We will always have the times for prayer scheduled on Planning Center. The default will be at the end of service for 3-5 minutes. If it is scheduled during the service at another time, please take note when you are asked so you can prepare. The other times prayer may be scheduled would be at some point during praise and worship, the end of the message coupled with a worship song or after dismissal. Prayer times should on average be around 3-5 minutes every Sunday.

  • If you aren’t scheduled and someone is unable to attend at the last minute, please be available to pray for others when you can.

  • If you notice that there are people waiting in line for prayer, you can always expedite prayer lines by offering assistance, even when you aren’t scheduled.

  • Always, always, always wear your lanyard and introduce yourself to people if you do not know them. Ask them their name before praying if you do not know them and then ask what they would like prayer for. This is a great opportunity to make prayer more personal and invest in relationships.

  • Point people to The Next Move, which happens every Sunday at 12:30 in a four week rotation as a “next step” if they are just receiving Christ or are new to the church. The only time the class is not offered is when we have a fifth Sunday.

  • If you hand someone any of the cards that are in the prayer team baskets, please instruct them to either take them to Guest Services or place the card(s) in the silver box outside the office at the front of church.

  • If you have the opportunity to pray with someone to receive Christ as their Savior or to make a fresh commitment to follow Him (rededicate), have them fill out a “I said Yes to God” card, then place it in the offering bucket, take it to Guest Services, or place the filled out card in the silver drop box outside the office. Hand them a book for new believers as a gift and encourage them to attend The Next Move. These books and cards will be located in the prayer team baskets.
