"We don't need more information, we need to learn to filter information." This was something Pastor Keith Nix said to me over breakfast one morning when we were having a meeting. I had to stop him and think about that for a minute because this is profoundly true. We live in a day and age where there are so many claiming to be followers of Jesus and even certain groups have a "measure" of truth but more error than truth.
We as Christians are called to be able to grow into maturity so we do not get deceived by false teachers. I don't often go around throwing around names and saying this group is wrong and that group is wrong, unless it begins to affect the people I am called to shepherd....then that is where I have a responsibility. Paul talks all throughout the New Testament as well as Peter and even Jesus, warning of false teachers and how we need to grow to be able to discern for ourselves because at the end of the day, the pastor isn't always going to be there to tell you what is biblical and what isn't. This is the responsibility of each individual believer!
We want to grow in taking our faith seriously and a big piece of that is discernment. We should always, always, always start with scripture. The Bible is the revelation of God's heart to us. It shows us His character, His nature and how He operates. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, so if we don't see it in scripture and it falls outside of scripture, it is error because it isn't what God intended for us. I do believe that there is much more to God than what we see in scripture but that is not for me to find out on this earth because what God has chosen to reveal about Himself to us in this lifetime is in scripture. Eternity will be a different experience but we should be very cautious of any group or person that claims anything outside of scripture.
We should also be careful of those who misuse scripture to fulfill their agenda. This is why context matters and learning to rightfully divide the Word is important for a believer. I have found a few videos that may help you see how deception works and how dangerous theology can be very subtle. https://youtu.be/-TlYGF1_kJg In this video, a woman who was caught up in Bethel's School of the Supernatural talks about what goes on there, what they believe and why she was kicked out. Some of the things shared here may offend some but it is part of our duty to make sure we are discerning of what influences we allow in our lives.
Here is a great (and short) video to tell you signs of a false teacher. Let's continue to grow in learning the truth of God's Word so we do not get caught up in false teachers and dangerous theologies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqxe03xMdUo
Hebrews 5:12-14 "12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."
Let's keep growing together...repent when we get it wrong and seek to know the REAL God...the God of scripture.
